Together with Studio City for Quiet Skies, we are providing this update to you about some very disturbing developments regarding the new Van Nuys Airport (“VNY”) “fix.” We have reviewed the FAA materials produced online and watched the FAA presentation of August 6, 2019. Shockingly, this “fix” appears to create a second superhighway of departures out of VNY running along almost the exact same path as the Burbank Airport (“BUR”) proposed procedures that our communities have vehemently opposed – just in reverse.
The graphic above is from the FAA 8-6-19 presentation which originally only depicted VNY flight tracks and proposed VNY Waypoint 3. For your reference, we have added street names, BUR proposed procedures waypoints JAYTE and TEAGN, and the BUR path in white.
Under this “fix” many areas of Sherman Oaks and Studio City will receive the majority of VNY departures – running first along Valley Vista and then Ventura Boulevard, as the path travels east from Sherman Oaks through the heart of Studio City, bringing noise and pollution to all under its path. Neighborhoods along Ventura Blvd and Valley Vista will be severely impacted.
And since the revised VNY departure path (and the proposed BUR path) will be up to 0.5 nautical miles wide, per FAA regulations, even neighborhoods and schools deep in the Santa Monica Mountains and along the Mulholland Corridor will continue to get jet traffic (click HERE to see FAA regulations). Our community is already decimated on a daily basis by the BUR flight path and the current VNY path. Concentrating the VNY path through Sherman Oaks and Studio City would be unimaginable.
The FAA claimed in their 8/6/19 presentation that this “fix” can only occur if Los Angeles World Airports and the City of Los Angeles formally request it.* Therefore, we are asking all of you to write to your LA City Council Member, Mayor Garcetti, LAWA, and the LA City Attorney and let them know this “fix” is completely unacceptable. They must tell the FAA to stop this madness and come up with real, meaningful solutions for both BUR and VNY – simultaneously.
And those solutions need to happen NOW!
